Jean Claude Roy was born in Rochefort-sur-Mer on the west coast of France in 1948. He knew from the age of seven that he would be an artist, and was encouraged by his grandfather, a farmer of modest means who bought paintings at auctions. At the age of sixteen, Jean Claude attended merchant marine training and took his first job as an apprentice electrician on a cable-repair boat. There followed several years at sea, with much time spent in the port of St John’s, Newfoundland where his interest in art turned to landscape. In 1971 he emigrated to Newfoundland and for the next ten years worked as a marine electrician by day and an artist by night. He attended art classes for only two lessons and is essentially self-taught. By 1973 he was selling in local galleries and he had his first solo exhibition in 1974. There followed two exhibitions at the provincial art gallery and representation in galleries in other parts of Canada.<\/p>

In 1982 he returned to France to establish himself as an artist in his own country, while rebuilding the stone farmhouse in which he had grown up and cultivating his orchard. He maintained his ties with Newfoundland however, and since 1994 he has divided his time between the two countries.<\/p>

He describes his style as “expressionist-colourist”, working most frequently in oils with a palette knife. Since the late 1980’s a characteristic of his landscapes has been the presence of the sun; after staring at the sun, a black spot in front of his eyes was transformed into the sun on his canvas; he found that this added light to the landscape below, and it has now become an important part of the composition of each work.<\/span><\/p>

Painting almost every day, and usually on-site, his works reflect the season, the weather, the stories that passers-by tell him, his mood and the \u201cfeeling of the place\u201d. Thus each painting is both a page in his diary and in that of the place he paints.<\/p>

In 2011, Breakwater Books published Fluctuat Nec Mergitur<\/i>, the culmination of forty years of work and containing a painting of every community on the island. A special edition was designed and produced in conjunction with bookbinder Brian Roberts, each copy of which has an original oil painting bound into its cover. In 2017, a companion volume, Terra Magna<\/i>, was published, with images of Labrador.<\/p>

He is represented by galleries in Canada, the United States and France, and his works form part of many public and private collections.<\/p>

Jean Claude Roy est n\u00e9 en France \u00e0 Rochefort sur Mer, sur la c\u00f4te atlantique, en 1948. D\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e2ge de sept ans, il souhaite devenir artiste peintre. Il y est d\u2019ailleurs encourag\u00e9 par son grand-p\u00e8re, un fermier aux revenus modestes qui achetait de temps en temps des tableaux dans les salles des ventes.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

A l\u2019\u00e2ge de 16 ans, il suit une formation dans la marine marchande et il d\u00e9croche un premier emploi d\u2019\u00e9lectricien sur un c\u00e2blier. Il passera alors plusieurs ann\u00e9es en mer, et il effectuera de nombreuses escales au port de St Jean de Terre-Neuve. C\u2019est \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque que son int\u00e9r\u00eat artistique pour les paysages s\u2019affirme. En 1971, il \u00e9migre \u00e0 Terre-Neuve et, pendant les dix ann\u00e9es suivantes, il travaille comme \u00e9lectricien rebobineur le jour et comme artiste peintre le soir. Il prend des cours de peinture, seulement deux s\u00e9ances, et il est essentiellement autodidacte. A partir de 1973, ses toiles sont vendues dans plusieurs galeries locales et en 1974 il tient sa premi\u00e8re exposition en solo. S\u2019ensuivront deux autres expositions en solo \u00e0 la galerie d\u2019art de la province de Terre-Neuve et Labrador, ainsi que la pr\u00e9sentation de ses toiles dans des galeries d\u2019autres provinces canadiennes.<\/i><\/p>\n

En 1982, il d\u00e9cide de revenir en France car il souhaite \u00e9tablir une carri\u00e8re artistique dans son pays natal. Il maintient toutefois ses liens avec Terre-Neuve, et depuis 1994, il partage son temps entre les deux pays.<\/i><\/p>\n

Il d\u00e9crit son style comme \u201cexpressionniste coloriste\u201d et il travaille le plus souvent \u00e0 l\u2019huile et au couteau. Depuis la fin des ann\u00e9es 1980, une des caract\u00e9ristiques de ses paysages est la pr\u00e9sence du soleil. En regardant le soleil trop longtemps, un point noir obscurcit la vision, et ce point noir devient le soleil sur ses tableaux. Il a en effet r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019un soleil noir sur la toile donne plus de lumi\u00e8re au paysage, et c\u2019est devenu aujourd\u2019hui une partie importante de la composition de chacune <\/i>de ses \u0153uvres.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Peignant pratiquement tous les jours, et de pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence sur le terrain, son travail refl\u00e8te les saisons, le temps, les r\u00e9cits des passants, son humeur et ce qu\u2019il ressent pour l\u2019endroit. Donc chaque tableau est une page de sa vie personnelle et de la vie de l\u2019endroit qu\u2019il a peint.<\/i><\/p>\n

En 2011, Breakwaters Books a publi\u00e9 Fluctuat Nec Mergitur, le r\u00e9sultat de quarante ans de travail : ses peintures de toutes les communaut\u00e9s de l\u2019\u00eele de Terre-Neuve. Une \u00e9dition sp\u00e9ciale, dont la couverture de chaque copie est un tableau \u00e0 l\u2019huile original, a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ue et produite avec la collaboration du relieur Brian Roberts. Jean Claude travaille maintenant \u00e0 un volume similaire sur le Labrador, dont la publication est pr\u00e9vue pour l\u2019automne 2016.<\/i><\/p>\n
